Festival survival essentials for MDMA users

Hydration, electrolytes, temperature, sleep, food. The boring stuff that prevents the most common — and most preventable — festival harms.

Most MDMA-related deaths at festivals are not from overdose in the pharmacological sense. They are from hyperthermia (the body overheating) and hyponatremia (drinking too much water without electrolytes). Both are entirely preventable. This is the boring checklist.

Before you arrive

  • Sleep. Two nights of poor sleep before a festival significantly amplifies the comedown. Plan accordingly.
  • Eat properly. Take MDMA on a full but not heavy stomach. A light meal 1–2 hours before is ideal.
  • Test what you have. Marquis + Mandelin + Mecke. If it's a pill, scrape from the inside, not the surface. See our reagent kit guide.
  • Pre-dose if you choose to:
    • 400 mg magnesium glycinate (reduces jaw clenching)
    • Optional regimen: 600 mg ALA + 1 g vitamin C + 500 mg ALCAR every 4 hours
    • These are widely discussed as neuroprotective; evidence is suggestive, not conclusive

What to bring

  • Refillable water bottle, 500–750 ml. Bigger is not better; you are more likely to drink dangerously fast.
  • Electrolyte tablets or powder. Plain water without sodium can be dangerous at MDMA doses. Sport drink works in a pinch.
  • Hat with brim and lightweight long sleeves. Sunburn on top of MDMA is unnecessary suffering.
  • Bandanna or scarf you can wet for cooling your neck.
  • A small bag of plain, salted snacks (pretzels, salted nuts). Keeps electrolytes up and gives you something to put in your stomach when the comedown hits.
  • Earplugs with frequency-balanced filters. Two days of 110 dB will damage your hearing. Filtered plugs preserve the music.
  • Phone with location shared with at least one sober person.

During

Hydration

  • 250–500 ml of water per hour when active. Not more. Hyponatremia (low blood sodium) is a real cause of death in MDMA users — it presents as confusion, headache, nausea, and can progress to seizures and brain swelling.
  • Always with electrolytes. Even a pinch of salt in a 500 ml bottle is meaningfully better than nothing.
  • If you have not urinated in 4+ hours and feel "off," sit down somewhere cool and slowly sip an electrolyte drink. Tell a friend.

Temperature

  • Take breaks from dancing every 30–60 minutes. Find a cool area, sit, sip water.
  • Don't wear a backpack while dancing — it traps heat against your spine.
  • If you feel "too hot to function," stop everything. Get to shade, remove layers, wet the bandanna, sip water with electrolytes. Hyperthermia escalates faster than people expect.

Redosing

  • A second 1/2 dose 2–3 hours in extends the peak modestly and amplifies the next-day comedown sharply.
  • A third dose is almost never worth it. You will spend the rest of the night chasing diminishing returns and the next 3 days flatter than you would otherwise be.
  • Spacing future doses. Whatever your tolerance does to one festival, repeating it the next weekend has a real chance of producing a flat, unenjoyable experience and worse neurotoxicity.

Signs you need to find medical help, fast

Tell a friend, find medical (every major festival has it on-site), or have someone call:

  • Body very hot to touch + confused or agitated
  • Stopped sweating despite the heat
  • Severe headache with nausea
  • Disorientation, slurred speech, inability to stand
  • Chest pain, irregular heartbeat
  • Loss of consciousness, even briefly

Tell the medical team what you took. They are not law enforcement; they need to know to treat you correctly.

After

  • Eat real food the next morning. Comedown depression amplifies on an empty stomach.
  • Hydrate gradually for the next 24 hours.
  • Sleep when you can, but accept that one bad night of sleep is normal.
  • Plan a "low effort" Monday. The 2-day-after dip is real and is not a sign of anything being wrong.
  • 5-HTP is widely discussed as a comedown aid. It should not be taken on the day of MDMA (serotonin syndrome risk), but is generally considered safe starting ~24 hours after. The evidence is suggestive but not conclusive.
